Margaret E. Cowan Martin (75), of Emporia died Friday, September 11, 2015 at Flint Hills Care Center. Cremation is planned.
Margaret Ellen Cowan Martin, the daughter of Charles Hadley and Violet May Day Cowan, was born January 10, 1940 on the family farm in North Lyon County. She graduated from Emporia High School in 1958 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emporia State University in 1972. She taught English at ESU and also was a legal secretary for the District Attorney in Topeka and a para-educator for U.S.D. 253.
She married Edward B. Ellis in 1958 in Oklahoma. He preceded her in death. She later married Lewis G. Martin and he survives and lives in Deadwood, South Dakota.
Other surviving members of the family include: two sons, Edward C. Martin and Eric D. Martin, both of Emporia; two daughters, Jodi L. Ellis of Emporia and Christy S. and her husband Larry L. Lowe of Divide, Colorado; three brothers and their wives, David P. (Glenda) Cowan of Vacaville, California, Charles D. “Chuck” (Donna) Cowan of Garnett, Kansas, Roger L. Cowan of Emporia; one sister, Mary Jo Amirault of Topeka; two grandsons, John C. Charland of Manitou Springs, Colorado and Justin T. Charland of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Donna E. Ticknor; and an infant grandson, David Edward Ellis.
Her Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Grace United Methodist Church, Emporia. Pastor Susan Daniel-Brey of the church will officiate. The committal service will be held at the Patio Garden in Memorial Lawn Cemetery at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday September 16, 2015.
