Margaret J. Mchugh

Margaret McHugh, 85, Canton, Kansas and formerly of Emporia, died Thursday morning, September 6, 2018 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

Funeral service will be held at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia on Monday, September 10, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. Burial will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery, Emporia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 7:00 to 9:00.

Margaret Jean McMurphey was born in Hartford, Kansas on March 27, 1933, the daughter of George Olin and Alice Marie (Laws) McMurphey. She began attending school in Hartford, Kansas and Graduated from Admire (Kansas) High School   Margaret married Gary L. McHugh on May 13, 1972 in Emporia, Kansas.  He passed away April 11, 2002.

Surviving family members include sons; Gary Leon (Alicia Heim) McHugh, Canton, KS, and Verle (Jeanette) McMurphey, Hartford, KS.  brother; Glen McMurphey, Emporia, sisters; Myra Jones and Marilyn Lambert, Emporia, and Marjorie Hylton, Montgomery, Texas, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary, two brothers, three sisters and one great-grandson.

She had been a member of First Congregational Church, Emporia, and was attending the Canton (Kansas) Christian Church. Her first job out of school was with Russell-Stover Candies in Emporia, and she later was an accountant for Penney’s Ready Mix, Emporia Ready Mix, Ralph Hahn Real Estate, and finally with Shapiro-Mock Law Firm.

Margaret and her husband, Gary, were active in Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2587, Emporia, for many years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
