Margaret Quirarte

June 17, 1923 — June 26, 2012

Margaret Quirarte was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 26, 2012, at her home in Emporia, Kansas. She was 89. Margaret was born in Mexico, in the state of Durango on June 17, 1923, the daughter of Petra Rodriguez.

Margaret attended school in Durango, where she received her teaching degree and taught first grade in a private school with a class size of 90 students. She was so dedicated to her students that they requested she be allowed to teach their class through elementary school. The request was granted, but before it could be fulfilled, she became pen pals with an American soldier fighting in Europe during World War II. This long distance friendship led to her pen pal, Santos Quirarte, traveling to Mexico after the war and asking her to marry him. They were married in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico on February 23, 1946. They lived most of their married life in Strong City, Kansas, before moving to Emporia in 1984.

Margaret was a homemaker for the majority of her life. She worked for ten years as a nurse’s aide in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. The same dedication that she exhibited with her students was very much a part of how she raised her children and tended to her patients.

She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Santos of Emporia; their five sons, John (Julie) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Leo of Emporia, Ed (Carol) of Wichita, Kansas, Cesar (Wanda) of Bartlett, Tennessee, and Gene (Deb) of Lawrence, Kansas; three daughters, Rose Good (Don) of Council Grove, Kansas; Evie Deitrich (John) of Holton, Kansas; and Gloria Davis (Kenny) of Independence, Kansas; 23 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia, Kansas. Father Anthony Williams will conduct the service. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Emporia. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening, June 29, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The family will receive friends before the Rosary, beginning at 6:00 p.m., and also following the Rosary until 8:00 p.m.
