Marilyn Elizabeth Hoy of Emporia died on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at her home.  She was 84.

Marilyn was born on September 23, 1939, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Emporia the daughter of Virgil and Elizabeth Rees Lambert.  She married Garry A. Hoy on February 5, 1966, in Emporia.  They divorced in 1987.

Surviving family members include her son Gregg (Kristy) A. Hoy of Emporia; two nephews and three nieces.

She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother Robert V. Lambert, Sr.

Marilyn was born and raised and returned to live southwest of Emporia.  She was a graduate of Emporia High School and the College of Emporia with many graduate hours at Emporia State University, Kansas State University and Wichita State University.  She was a lifetime member of the Sardis Congregational Church where she served as moderator, treasurer and deacon.

Other memberships included the Bluestem Cattle women, St. David’s Welsh Society (secretary 29 years) Prairie Hen Extension Unit, Lyon Couty 4-H Extension Board, Founder of the Lyon Couty Ambassador Program and the professional organizations of KNEA, KBEA, and Delta Pi Epsilon.

Marilyn was awarded the Kansas Business Educator of the Year, R.B. Russell/George Walters Business Educator, Who’s Who of America Students and the Kansas Teacher Hall of Fame in Dodge City nominee.  She can be described as a quiet, caring, patient, devoted and dedicated person.  Family members were important to her.  She enjoyed flowers, reading, music and 52 years of teaching.  Those that knew her know she was humble person even though she received many awards in her teaching career.

Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 9, 2024, at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the Sardis Congregational Church south of Emporia with burial following at the Greenwood Cemetery, Emporia.  Memorial contributions to St. David’s Society can be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, Kansas 66801.
