Dr. Marion P. Emerson, 97, retired ESU professor, died Friday, February 27, 2015 at his home.
Marion was a mathematics professor for 35 years. He taught at Harper College (SUNY), and Southwest Missouri State College (MSU), before coming to Kansas State Teachers College (ESU) where he taught 26 years and was Mathematics Department Chair from 1961-1979.
Marion Preston Emerson, the son of William Alfred and Alice Maud Emerson, was born February 24, 1918 in Washburn, Missouri. He attended a one-room school near Wayne, Missouri, and graduated from Washburn High School. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Southwest Missouri State Teachers College (now Missouri State University) in 1938; his Master of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin in 1948; and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois in 1952.
He served during WW II in the Army Air Force, attaining the rank of Captain. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Forum Club, Genealogy Club, and the MOOT Club.
Professionally, he was a member of many associations, including: Sigma XI, American Mathematical Society, Mathematical Association of America, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Kansas Association of Teachers of Mathematics, The Association for Educational Data Systems, Kappa Mu Epsilon, and Pi Mu Epsilon.
During his career, he was listed in American Men of Science and in Who’s Who in Education. In 1983, he was elected as one of the outstanding members of Kappa Mu Epsilon.
In 1987, he was honored when Emporia State University hosted an Algebra and Topology Conference in his name. This Conference was attended by mathematicians from across the Midwest.
He married Jane C. Barber on September 20, 1947 at the Congregational Church in Ripon, Wisconsin. She survives of the home.
Other surviving members of the family include: one son, William D. Emerson (Irene Spahr) of Arvada, Colorado; two daughters, Anne E. (Thomas) Hutton of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Alice M. Emerson of Spokane, Washingon; three grandchildren, Erin Hutton and Meghan (Randy) Chockley, both of Jefferson City, and Marika Emerson (Dave Setchell) of Portland, Oregon.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Irene and Lillian; and a brother, William A. Emerson, Jr.
Cremation is planned, with a private family graveside service to be held in June at the Maplewood Cemetery, Exeter, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Dr. Marion and Jane Emerson Scholarship Fund at ESU. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
