Mary L. Adkins, Emporia, died Monday Morning, January 24, 2011 at her home. She was 89.

Mary L. Cook was born January 14, 1922 in rural Emporia, the daughter of Jerry Franklin and Clara Elizabeth Wagner Cook. She married Sam C. Adkins at Cottonwood Falls, Kansas on January 24, 1940. He died June 8, 1990 in Emporia.

Surviving family members include: two brothers, William F. Cook and Donald E. Cook, Sr.; and two sisters, Dorothy Mae Fehr, and Claudean Casida, all four of Emporia. There are also a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and three brothers, Jesse and Clifford Cook, and Robert Cook, who died in infancy.

During World War II she worked for the federal rationing office in the Civic Auditorium, and also for Hahn Tent & Awning Company. She later worked at Newman Memorial Hospital, Hopkins Manufacturing, and for 26 years at Wise Hatchery. She had been retired several years.

She was a past member of the War Dads Auxiliary in Council Grove, The Old Time Pickers and Fiddlers Club, Lyon County Farm Bureau, and the Bushong Ladies Auxiliary.

Funeral services will be at the Chapel of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 1:30 P.M. The service will be conducted by Pastor John Davis, Saint Mark’s Lutherans Church. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Toledo.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30.
