Mary E. “Betty” Morgan, Emporia, Kansas, died at her home Thursday, January 26, 2012 at the age of 87.
Mary Elizabeth Morgan was born at Hartford, Kansas October 26, 1924, the daughter of Chester Burns and Millie J. (Ellis) Jones. She married Herbert Earl Morgan on July 31, 1943 in Emporia. He died June 9, 2007.
Surviving family members include: her four children, Herbert E. Morgan, Jr. (wife, Joann) of Edgewood, New Mexico, Russell E. Morgan (wife, Katherine) of Wichita, Kansas, Gayle E. Brown (husband, Marvin) of Emporia, and Kayla E. McKinzie (husband, Steve) of Manhattan, Kansas; sister, Anita M. Tobin of Chandler, Arizona; grandchildren, Mark A. Brown (Cynthia), Lisa M. Duncan-Edes (Randell), Matthew E. Brown (Stephanie), Herbert E. “Tres” Morgan, III (Kathy), Michael Morgan, Megan Morgan, Michelle Morgan, Tabatha K. Oakley (Keith), Brandon W. Morgan, Beth H. McKinzie, and Joel S. McKinzie; and great-grandchildren, Donovan, Rebecca, and Kaitlin Brown, Kimberly and Michael Duncan, Herbert E. “T.J.” Morgan, IV, Tristen, Kiara, Lily, Seth and Rose Morgan, Kendra and Tyson Crisp, and Madison Morgan.
A son, Larry E. Morgan, died earlier, as did her parents and three brothers.
Betty was a 1942 graduate and Salutatorian of her class from Hartford High School. Following school, she worked as a switchboard operator in Hartford. She moved to Emporia, and was a waitress at the Topic Café. During World War II, she sewed tents at Hahn Tent and Awning Company. She later worked at Fanestil Packing Company, and the food services departments of Sacred Heart Catholic School and USD #253.
She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women of the church. She had been a volunteer in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and 4-H.
Funeral services will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, Monday, January 30, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., conducted by Pastor Susan Daniel-Brey, of the church. Interment will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.
The family will receive friends in the chapel of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Sunday evening, January 29, 2012 from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established with the church; contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
