Mary Lou Rogers-McClain, 87 year old widow, mother to four children, “Gran-Gran” to ten grandchildren, as well as sixteen great-grandchildren and also one four month old great-great grandson, was called home to glory this April 22, 2017 at her home in Horizon Plaza.
Mother Mary was born July 24, 1929 in Emporia to Guy and Charlotte Marie (Tidwell) Rogers. Mother Mary attended Kansas State Teachers College (now known as Emporia State University).
Mary married and raised her family of four while continuing to earn a Bachelor’s Degree. She continued to take one class per semester until her youngest child graduated high school. She then went back to ESU full time.
Once completing her bachelor’s degree she next graduated from the University of Kansas in 1980, with a Master’s Degree in social work. She began her career as a Licensed Mental Social Worker at Topeka State Hospital. From there she worked with patients at the famous Menninger in Topeka. Mother Mary was also employed at Newman Regional Health in Emporia. Her career ended at Quest in Hartford.
During Mother McClain’s retirement and all thru her work experiences, she was a staunch, faithful member of St. James Baptist Church of Emporia. She has been a “Mother” to all who came into contact with her including family members and friends.
Proceeding Mother Mary McClain in death were both her parents, a brother, Charles Guy Rogers I of Rose Hill; a sister Jo A Rogers-McKeone of Alamogordo, NM; her husband, Frank Abram McClain of Emporia; and one daughter, Wilma Lou Dorsey also of Emporia.
Surviving members of the family are, a widowed daughter, Ana Lissa Marie Dorsey-Evans of Grand Rapids, MI; a son Larry Duane (Deidre) Dorsey and her youngest daughter Gretta Mae Dorsey-Morris. She was also blessed with ten grandchildren, Sgt.1st Class Bobby (Sherry) Evans, Jr. of Lake Elsinor, CA, Guy Slater (Dianne) Evans of Grand Rapids, MI, Jamaal William Dorsey of Iola, Derrick Dupree Morris, Dayton Durriel Morris, Mignon Yvette (Kerry) Dorsey-Morris, Magan Izette Dorsey, Alexia Brown, and Marshawn Mace all of Emporia; Edward Raphael (Michelle) Evans of Detroit, MI. Mother Mary has sixteen great-grandchildren and one four months old great-great-grandson. God has blessed her with an array of loving and loyal nieces and nephews also. Far too many to list but treasured indeed by Mother Mary McClain.
The family will greet friends from 7:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett. The Going Home funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 28th at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 8th and Sylvan. Pastor Michael Moor will officiate. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery. Memorial donations to St. James Missionary Baptist Church may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett.
