Mary Ellen Phipps, 85, formerly of Emporia, and Matfield Green, died on January 25, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas.
  
  
  Mary Ellen was born on October 4, 1925 in Springfield, Colorado, the daughter of Frank Diener and Nettie Erma Adams Swanson. She married Lloyd Nathan Phipps in June 2, 1946 in Ottawa, Kansas. He died on January 22, 1997 in Emporia, Kansas.
  
  
  Surviving family members include: son, Alan Lloyd Phipps of Matfield Green, Kansas; daughters, Sheila Cooper of rural Elmdale, Kansas, Valerie Ringler of rural Emporia, and Michele Stackley of rural Strong City, Kansas; eleven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
  
  
  She is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frank Melvin Swanson; and a sister, Neva Mae Mentzer.
  
  
  Mary graduated from Matfield Green High School and also the Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. Her first teaching job was in Cimarron, Kansas, the fall of 1945 and then in the Chase County area. She also taught at the Emporia State University Library, and was a librarian at the Americus School. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Emporia, and she enjoyed active memberships in various professional, civic and social organizations.
  
  
  Funeral Services will be Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Christian Church in Emporia. Pastor Bob Colerick will conduct the service. The family will receive friends the hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Emporia.
