Mary Madge Shaw (92) formerly of Emporia, passed away Thursday, September 16, 2010, at the Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Mary Madge Wining, the daughter of William Richard and Amy M. (Rehn) Wining, was born September 18, 1917, in Canton, Kansas. She spent her early life around Canton, graduating from Canton High School and later graduating from the Asbury Hospital School of Nursing in Salina in 1939. On November 28, 1942, she married Jacob J. Barrett. He died October 14, 1953. She then married Harold R. Shaw on November 30, 1955, and they later divorced.

Mary was a Registered Nurse beginning her career at the La Crosse Hospital. She later moved to Emporia and worked at the St. Mary’s Hospital, then she worked at the Kansas Neurological Institute, where she retired in 1984. She was a member of the Lowman United Methodist Church in Topeka and the Golden beacon Sunday school Class at the church.

She is survived by two daughters: Mary Pamela Barrett of Lone Jack, MO, and Penny Carol Cook of Oklahoma City, OK; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Marvin Wining, John Wining, and William R. Wining.

The Graveside Service will be held 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at the Patio Garden in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Services will be conducted by her nephew, Rev. James Wining of the Heaven’s Gate Gospel Church in Lees Summit, MO. Memorial contributions to the Topeka Humane Society may be sent in care of the funeral home.
