Mary Ethel Unruh, 83, of Emporia, Kansas, died Sunday, October 5, 2014, at Golden Living Center in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas.
Mary was born on August 24, 1931 in El Dorado, Kansas, the daughter of Ivan and Lena Blanche Griggs Cooper. She married Harry Franklin Unruh on June 21, 1951 at Cassoday United Methodist Church, Cassoday, Kansas. He died on November 28, 2002 in Kansas City, Missouri.
She is survived by: son, Doug (Frances) Unruh of Emporia; daughter, Debby (Robert) James of Emporia; brothers, Lewie Cooper and Harold Cooper both of El Dorado, Kansas; grandchildren, Lt. Col. Chad (Nicki) James of Bonanza, Oregon, Kevin (Ashley) James of Emporia, Jennifer (Jon) Sanders of Emporia, and Elizabeth Unruh of Emporia; great-grandchildren, Zachary James, Katelynne James, Emmaleigh James, Anna Claire James, Evan James, Lauren James, Ethan James, Paige Sanders, and Makayla Sanders.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and also her husband.
Mary worked for the State of Kansas in El Dorado before going to work for Dolly Madison Bakery for 29 years, where she was a supervisor in the office. Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church, Emporia, Friends of the Library, Cosmopolitan Club, and Methodist Women’s Circle. She enjoyed square dancing with the Bluestem Swingers, and was a member of several bridge clubs.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 9, 2014 at West Side Baptist Church, Emporia. The graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. at Cassoday Cemetery in Cassoday.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday evening, October 8, 2014 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia.
