Max R. Stewart, Sr.

Max R. Stewart, Sr., 91, of Emporia, Kansas died on April 26, 2011 at Newman Regional Health, Emporia.

Max was born on November 19, 1919 in Aurora, Nebraska, the son of William F. and Nellie (Peterson) Stewart. He graduated from Grand Island Nebraska High School in 1938, and from Lincoln School of Commerce in 1940. In May of 1942, he entered the military in the Army Air Corps and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant on October 1, 1943. Max was a German Prisoner of War from March 1, 1944 until April of 1945. He married Betty Everhart on January 18, 1942 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She died on June 2, 2002 in Emporia, Kansas.

Survivors include: a son Max Stewart, Jr. and wife Sharon of Emporia; a grandson Dr. Robert Stewart and wife Kim of Emporia, Kansas; and a great-granddaughter Abigail Stewart, also of Emporia.

He was preceded in death by: his wife of 60 years; a son, James Paul Stewart; granddaughter Heather Christine Stewart; sister, Lois Cogil; and an infant brother.

Max owned Stewart Shoe Service from 1949 until 1956 in Grand Island, Nebraska, until he moved to Emporia in 1957 and was a salesman for Tex Tan Western Leather from 1957 to 1977. He owned and operated Laundry Land from 1975 until 1985. Later he partnered with his son Max Jr. in Econo Wash and Thrif-T Car Wash. He was a member of the Emporia Presbyterian Church in Emporia. He was a member of the Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, and Masonic Lodge #33 in Grand Island, Nebraska.

The memorial graveside service will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the Patio Garden at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Inurnment will be in Maplewood Cemetery. The service will be conducted by Pastor Mike Sorsen of the Emporia Presbyterian Church in Emporia. Military honors will be conducted by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.

The American Red Cross packages given to POWs during World War II saved Max’s life, and he wanted any donations made to honor his life be sent to the American Red Cross.
