Melvin "Mel" C. Reed

Melvin C. Reed, 60, of Olpe died Sunday, March 8, 2015, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri.

Mel was born on November 13, 1954 in El Dorado, Kansas, the son of Vaney and Pauline Olive Crabtree Reed. He married Jeanette M. Redeker on February 14, 1981 in Emporia, Kansas. She survives.

Other survivors include: son, Joe Reed and wife Tiffany of Lebo, Kansas; daughter, Jill Reed-Ybarra and husband, Joe of Topeka, Kansas; mother-in-law, Barbara Redeker of Emporia; grandchildren, Caden, Noah, Aniston, and Owen; brothers, Paul Reed of Oswego, Kansas, John Reed of Hamilton, Kansas, and twin brother, Marion Reed of Glenwood, Iowa; and a sister, Ruth Onions of Kansas City, Kansas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and an infant sister Camilla Reed.

Mel went to school at Denver Automotive and Diesel College, and worked in the tire business for nearly 38 years. From 1977 to 1996, he worked at Breck's Tire, and then Cooper Tire from 1996 to 2002, when he opened Mel's Tire, all in Emporia. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Olpe, and Knights of Columbus, Olpe.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 A.M., Friday, March 13, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Olpe. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M., Thursday evening at the church. Visitation will follow the Rosary. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Olpe. Please feel free to dress casually.

The family requests no flowers, with memorial contributions instead to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Building Fund, American Lung Association or the Olpe Sports Complex, sent in care of the funeral home.
