Dr. Merle Vivian Bolz, 80, of Benton, Kansas formerly of Olpe, Kansas, died peacefully on March 2, 2016 in the care of her family and her dear friend and sister-in-law Marie Gilbert in Stroud, Oklahoma.

Surviving family members include: sons, Larry (and Yvette) Bolz of Olpe, David (and Angie) Bolz of Emporia, and Randy (and Nicki) Bolz of Moline, Illinois; daughters, Carol Bolz of Kansas City, Missouri, and Nancy Bolz of Benton, Kansas; grandchildren, Michael Bolz, Katy Bolz, Allie Bolz, Maria Bolz, Sophia Bolz, Jennifer Galindo Garza, and Adam Galindo; great-grandson Kash Garza; and brothers Myron (& Teresa) Emmons of Horton, Kansas, and Donald (& Barbara) Emmons of Dallas, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Gene Emmons, Devon Emmons, and Wayne Emmons.

Dr. Bolz was a Nurse and Nurse Educator for 40 years at Newman Hospital, Newman Hospital School of Nursing, and Emporia State University Newman Department of Nursing before retiring 18 years ago. She began her career as a student nurse at Newman Hospital School of Nursing, and then worked in every wing of the hospital before becoming House Supervisor. Helping children is one of her core commitments, so she began teaching Pediatric Nursing in 1967, before becoming the Director in 1985. Her dream was to move the three-year diploma program to a bachelor’s level degree, which she very proudly accomplished when the first cohort was admitted into Emporia State University in 1992. The Lyon County area has been blessed with higher quality health care professionals because of her dedication.

She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Other involvement was Newman Regional Health Hospital Board of Trustees, Lyon County Health Board, Kansas Action for Children Board, Kansas League of Nursing, Kansas State Nurses Association, Camp Woods Nursing Consultant, Compeer Partners, St. Anne's Altar Society, St. Joseph Cemetery Board, St. Joseph Parish Council, St. Joseph School Advisory Council, and St. Joseph Catholic Church Eucharistic Minister.
