Merle C. Martin, of Emporia, Kansas, died on May 12, 2012 at Holiday Resort Care Center in Emporia. She was 95.
Merle Smith, daughter of Frank O. and Myrtle Baysinger Smith, was born in the Hartford area on May 13, 1916. She attended grade school in the Gumbo District area and graduated from Hartford High School in 1935.
She married Harry L. Martin on July 27, 1935 at Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. He died on November 26, 1976. She helped on the farm and could work in the field on whichever tractor was needed at the time. When she wasn’t farming, she was fishing in one of the two ponds she had made and also stocked fish every other year. She was a charter member of the C.S.C. Extension Unit which was started in March of 1946. She was a member of the Hartford United Methodist Church in Harford, a member of the United Methodist Women and aided in the Hartford Penny Suppers, which called for two pies and help. Merle was a cook leader for Sunnyside 4-H.
Merle is survived by granddaughter, Tonya Wilson of Missouri; two great-granddaughters; and eight nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Donald Lee Martin (May 5, 2002); two brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until service time. The service will be conducted by Pastor Gene Huston of Hartford United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Chicago Mound Cemetery, southeast of Emporia.
