Mr. Merle L. Sayre, 82 of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, died October 2, 2010, at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, OK. He was a life-long farmer and stockman, farming in Lyon and Coffey counties in Kansas.
Merle Lee Sayre was born August 21, 1928, to Ernest E. and Rosa E. Whetherholt Sayre at Burns, KS. In 1945, he moved with his parents to Cottonwood Falls, graduating in 1946 from the Chase County High School. He attended Kansas State University before going to the Army. Mr. Sayre received an honorable discharge after serving 18 months in Korea. Merle was united in marriage to Dorothy Dryden on May 26, 1957 in the Nazarene Church in Emporia. She died April 10, 1999 in Emporia. One daughter, Becky, was born to this union. They moved to their farm near Neosho Rapids in 1958 and lived there until 1997, when Merle retired and they moved to Emporia. In 2008, Merle relocated to Sapulpa, Oklahoma to reside with his daughter and family. Merle was a faithful member of the First Friends Church in Emporia, the Lyon County Farm Bureau, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7957 in Emporia, the Gideons International – Emporia chapter.
He is survived by his daughter, Becky Sayre Bell, his son-in-law, Corey Bell; granddaughter Allison Bell and grandson Caleb Bell of the home; granddaughters Nicole Bell Benso of Glendale, Arizona; Carmen Bell of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and great granddaughter Mackenzie Benso; one sister, Rachel Rees of Topeka; one niece Ginger Strong of El Dorado; one nephew, Rex Rees of Topeka, and other relatives locally. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother, Benjamin Sayre.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Thursday, October 7, 2010, at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. The service will be conducted by Pastor Charity Sandstrom of the First Friends Church, and Pastor Leonard Wagner of the Church of God of Prophecy both of Emporia. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery at Neosho Rapids with Military honors by Ball-McColm Post #5 American Legion, and Lowry-Funston Post #1980 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 6, 2010, from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. Memorial contributions in place of flowers may be sent to the funeral home for the Emporia Senior Center, or the First Friends Church in Emporia.
