Michael H. Shane, Emporia, Kansas, died at his home Sunday morning, May 6, 2012, at the age of 66.
Mike was born at Southgate, California on August 4, 1945, the son of George Russell and Georgia (Miller) Shane. He married Trudy Sue Bjorkback in 1972 in Emporia; they later divorced. On September 8, 2007, Mike and Shawna Deann Smith were married in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives of the home.
Other surviving family members include his daughter, Molly Bea Shane-Teer, Overland Park, Kansas; and his sister, Pat Kistner of Ulysses, Kansas.
His parents died earlier.
Mr. Shane was a 1963 graduate of Elkhart (Kansas) High School. He attended Pratt Community College, where he played basketball. He attended Kansas State Teachers College (Emporia State University), receiving both his bachelors and masters degrees. After graduation, Mike began teaching in the Emporia School District. He was a football coach beginning with the 8th Grade team in 1968, and later at Emporia High School until 1978. His Emporia High team won the 6A Kansas State Football Championship in 1976. Mike was also a business owner, probably best known for his ownership of Mike’s Sporting Goods.
Mike had chosen to further the education of others through the donation of his body to the Kansas University School of Medicine, Kansas City, Kansas.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Pastor Jeannie Jensen of the church, and Mr. Bill Wilson, Garden City, Kansas.
A memorial has been established with SOS of Emporia or Hand In Hand Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
