Mildred Ann Daharsh, 87, Rural Emporia, Kansas and longtime resident of Americus, died Sunday, November 26, 2017 at her home.
Mildred Ann Grimsley was born at her parents’ home east of Americus, Kansas on February 17, 1930, the daughter of John William and Anna Marie (Christensen) Grimsley. She married Chester Eugene “Gene” Daharsh on April 23, 1949 at the Americus United Methodist Church, Americus, Kansas.
She is also survived by her daughter; Mary Ann Stiner (Ed), brothers; Jack and Dale Grimsley and grandchildren; Bobby Stiner (Amy), Rebecca Michael (Grant), and Melissa Stiner. Also, great-grandchildren; Andrew and Ryan Stiner and Ezekiel Michael.
She was preceded in death by her son; Danny Eugene Daharsh, brothers; Ross, Leslie, and Glenn Grimsley, and sister, Winifred Gatewood.
She was the 5th of 7 children. She attended Wheeler Grade School and graduated from Americus Rural High School. She worked at Kansas Electric Power Company, Lyon County Register of Deeds Office, and did some bookkeeping for the Americus Elevator, and also for the Lyon County Rural Water District #1 for several years. She worked for The Emporia Gazette in the ad department. Then Mildred and “Gene” moved to their farm northwest of Americus and raised their children and farmed together while “Gene” worked for Kansas Power and Light Company (Westar Energy).
Mildred filled in as a bookkeeper for The Emporia Gazette and after moving to their new home near Emporia she began her final job at The Gazette as bookkeeper and assistant to the Publisher for a total of 26 years when she retired.
Mildred enjoyed tending to her vegetable and flower gardens and was an accomplished piano player and gave piano lessons. She loved traveling with “Gene” and her family, also spending time with friends and family and playing cards.
Mildred was a member of the Americus United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and was a Kindergarten Sunday School Teacher for 15 years. She was also a member of Frost Ladies Aid, and Fortieth Farmerettes HDU.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at the Americus United Methodist Church, Americus, Kansas on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2:00 P.M, conducted by Pastor Nancy Mathis of the church and Pastor Gene Huston. Private family inurnment will be in the Americus Cemetery. The family requests that everyone dress in a casual manner.
The family will receive friends at the church Friday evening, December 1, 2017 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers memorials have been established with the Americus United Methodist Church, Hand In Hand Hospice, or the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation at Kansas University Medical Center. Contributions may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett
