Mildred Elizabeth Leffler

Mildred E. Leffler, 102, of Americus, Kansas, passed away Fri, Nov. 9, 2012 at Holiday Resort Care Center in Emporia.

Mildred Elizabeth Gibson, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Copperwaite Gibson, was born April 9, 1910 in Bushong, Kansas. After graduating from Bushong High School, she attended Emporia Business School.

She married L.W. "Jack" Leffler on June 12, 1930 in Bushong. They lived in Hymer, Kansas, then moved to the Clover Cliff Ranch in Elmdale, Kansas. Later they moved to a farm west of Americus in the Fruitland neighborhood. He passed away June 12, 1984.

Mildred always raised chickens, grew a large garden, and did a lot of canning. She was kept busy during farming season by running errands, helping the farm crew move between fields, preparing large meals for the crews at noon and evening, and driving a feed truck from bunk to bunk to save time at cattle feeding time.

She was a member of the Americus United Methodist Church, the Fruitland Willing Helper Club, and various Americus Clubs. She was a member of the Americus Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 315, receiving a 75 year award from the Grand Chapter of the Kansas Order of the Eastern Star in 2009. In 2010, she received the Holiday Queen Award from the care center.

Mildred is survived by a son, Wayne “Jackie” and wife Mary Leffler of Americus; four grandchildren, Thomas and wife Patty Leffler of Augusta, Kansas, Bill and wife Cindy Leffler of Americus, Margie and husband Randy Combes of Emporia, Peggy Anderjaska of North Platte, Nebraska; nine great-grandchildren, Chad Iseman, Dr. Michelle Iseman, Jacquelyne and Natalie Leffler, Travis, Angela, and Roger Combes, and Kenda and Tracy Olson; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Homer and James Gibson; two sisters, Goldie Riegel and Vera Gibson; and one great-grandson, Cory Leffler.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, November 15, 2012, at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. Pastor Pat Bus will officiate. Burial will follow in Fruitland Cemetery, west of Americus.

The family will greet friends from 10 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. prior to the service on Thursday. Memorial donations to Americus Methodist Church, Americus Fire Department, or Hand In Hand Hospice may be sent in care of the funeral home.
