Mildred J. “Millie” Rathke, 89, Emporia, and a longtime resident of Olpe, died at the Holiday Resort Care Center, Emporia, Monday evening, February 20, 2017.
Mildred J. Schwartz was born May 2, 1927 at Basehor, Leavenworth County, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Frances (Hund) Schwartz. She married Harry Leroy Edwards, which ended in divorce. She married William J. Rathke August 17, 1956 in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. He survives.
Other family members include two daughters, Betty Watts, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Patricia Hartford, Fort Scott, Kansas; a sister, Clara Ersham, Santa Yanez, California; and a brother, Edward Schwartz, Lees Summit, Missouri. There are also six grandchildren, Jimmy, Will, and Bethany Hartford, Wade and Cole Watts, and Julie Cooper; as well as five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister
She lived on the family farm until 1967 when they moved to Olpe and worked for USD 252, South Lyon County Schools. She later worked for Saint Joseph Catholic Church and the Saint Joseph School. She and her husband also looked after the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, west of Olpe, for a number of years.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, February 24, 2017 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Olpe. Father John Cordes will celebrate the Mass. Interment will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, west of Olpe.
The Rosary will be recited Thursday evening at 7:30 P.M. at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Olpe.
