Norma Jean Powell, 87, of Visalia, California died on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the Prestige Senior Living Center in Visalia, California.
Norma was born on November 22, 1928 in Americus, Kansas the daughter of Lorenz K. and Gladys Nielsen. She and her two brothers, Bill and John and one sister, Doris and her mother moved to Emporia after her father passed away in 1942. She graduated from Emporia High School. She worked as a secretary for the agents of the Lyon County Office of the Kansas Farm Bureau. After marrying Darrell F. Powell in July of 1951, she worked for Helen Sellers as the Director of Nursing at Newman Hospital as her secretary for over five years. She worked as a secretary to the Director of Nursing at Longview Texas Regional Hospital for five years.
For several years she was involved in the Christian Women’s Club in Visalia, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada. She was a long time member of the First Congregational Church of Emporia. When in Nevada she was affiliated with the Green Valley Baptist Church in Henderson.
She was preceded in death by her mother, and her brother John Nielsen, and her sister Doris Douglas.
She is by her husband; sons, Neal Powell and wife Cheryl, and Bradley Powell and wife Barbara; grandson Neal Powell, Jr. and wife Andrea; great-grandchildren Ava Elizabeth Powell and Floyd Neal Powell III; brother, Bill Nielsen and wife Joann; brother in law, Keith Douglas; several cousins and many close friends survive. She was considered an excellent housekeeper, cook, mother and wife.
Cremation has taken place with a memorial service at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia with burial following at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions to Emporia Alzheimer’s Support Group in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
