Norman Hugh Morray

Norman Hugh Morray, Emporia, Kansas, died Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Holiday Resort, Emporia, at the age of 91.

Norman was born January 4, 1926 in Emporia. He married Bonnie Sue Colwell March 25, 1948 in Emporia. She survives.

Besides his wife, Bonnie, he is survived by sons, Norman Morray, Jr. of Hutchinson, KS, and Brian Morray, and his wife, Jana, of Gridley, KS; daughters, Carol Morray Banister, Edmond, Oklahoma and Tamie Fleming, and her husband, Don, Ward, Arkansas;eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by their dog, Holly Noel.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Vern Campbell Shuck, his father, Earl Morray, Jr., and stepfather, Leonard Schuck, as well as an infant son, Paul Gregory.

Norman graduated from Emporia High School in 1944 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy. He received his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station, Illinois. Upon graduation, he was assigned to LST 384 in Norfolk, VA (where they had signs saying “Sailors and dogs keep off of the lawns”). LST 384 went from the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Panama Canal and then to most of the islands in the Pacific. He was promoted to Quarter Master 3rd class, and returned to San Francisco in 1946.

After being Honorably discharged, he returned to Emporia and graduated from Kansas State Teachers College (ESU) in 1950 with a Bachelor’s Degree. In 1963 he received his Master’s in School Administration. He taught 6th grade at Madison (Kansas) Elementary School for 40 years, retiring in 1991. During his retirement he enjoyed gardening, golfing, auctions, and attending grandkids' activities.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Madison Lions Club.

Funeral Services will be at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, KS on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 1:30 P.M. The service will be conducted by Mr. Charles Bradbury, First United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. Military Honors will be presented by Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M.
