Opal Marie Lipson, 85, Emporia, Kansas, died at Emporia Presbyterian Manor on Saturday, April 7, 2012.
Opal Marie Bailey was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 13, 1926, the daughter of Edward James and Amanda Marie (LeDuc) Bailey.
Mrs. Lipson worked in the banking and accounting profession in Kentucky and Michigan. When she retired, she joined the Peace Corps, and later the IVS (Internal Volunteer Service). While overseas, she helped a company in Popayan, Columbia, set up their books; in St. Lucia, she assisted a company with their accounting program; and lastly, in Botswana, Africa, she helped a local bushman build an economy, as well as set up a convention and visitors bureau.
She moved home to Kansas in the late 1980’s and worked with her son at his business, C & C Consulting.
Since her second retirement, she has volunteered for local agencies serving in various capacities. While living at Emporia Presbyterian Manor, she served on the resident council, in various roles including a term as president.
Mrs. Lipson is survived by her son, Edward Lipson, and his wife, Patti, Emporia; two daughters, Karen Granger, and her husband, Malcolm, and Mary Evans, and her husband, David, all of Kentucky; eight grandchildren survive, including Jennifer Lipson, and Nicole Tollett; nine great-grandchildren, including Talen Hart; brother, James Bailey of Arizona; and a sister, Betty Bailey, also of Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Pat.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held in Room 110 of Emporia Presbyterian Manor on Saturday, April 21, at 1:00 P.M. The service will be conducted by Father Richard Warsnak, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia.
Memorials have been established with the Good Samaritan Fund of Emporia Presbyterian Manor, or Hand In Hand Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
