Dr. Oscar Francisco Hernandez (86) of Emporia, Kansas, died Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Newman Regional Health. Cremation is planned, with private family services at a later date.

Oscar Francisco Hernandez, the son of Oscar and Mercedes (Daniel) Hernandez, was born April 28, 1924 in Havana, Cuba. He married Carmen Placencia on May 18, 1951 in Havana. She survives, of the home. Dr. Hernandez is also survived by: one son, Oscar Alberto and his wife Susan of Emporia; one sister, Josefina Schoening of Miami, Fl.; two grandsons, Michael and Daniel; and one great-grandson, Leo. He was preceded in death by one sister.

He received his law degree from the University of Havana and practiced law in Vedado, Cuba. Following the revolution in Cuba, Oscar and Carmen sent their son, Oscar Alberto, to the United States and joined him in Miami in 1962. He worked as a social worker in Miami before settling in Emporia in 1964. After moving to Emporia, Oscar taught Spanish at Emporia State University, and later received his Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from the University of Florida. After retiring from ESU, he frequently volunteered as a translator at the Lyon County Courthouse. He attended the St. Teresa Chapel in the Didde Catholic Campus Center.
