Paul H. Shepherd

Paul H. Shepherd, 100, of Emporia, Kansas died, Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.

Paul was born April 20, 1913 in Hartford, Kansas, the son of Charles Elwood and Eva Clair (Eppley) Shepherd. He married Mary C. “Jane” Gilligan at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hartford on September 7, 1938. She died in Emporia on June 20, 1988. He later married Lela V. Doile on May 9, 1990 in Emporia. She died August 13, 2002 in Emporia.

He was the postmaster in Hartford for 27 years, retiring December 31, 1976. Paul served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hartford, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia, lifetime member of Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, Kansas City Clerks Association, National Association of Postmasters, and helped initiate the health plan for postal workers. Paul also enjoyed woodworking.

Paul is survived by: his companion, Edna Glaser of Emporia; Goddaughter, Linda Birk of Gridley, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Omer S. Shepherd, H. Myrl Shepherd and Fred L. Shepherd; and sisters, Chloe I. McCurry and Vera M. Morris.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, April 10, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hartford. The Celebrant will be Father Ray May of the church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Hartford. Military Honors by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion and Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The Rosary will be recited 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church and sent in care of the funeral home.
