Phillip D. Orear, 60 of Olpe, Kansas, died Wednesday, August 5, 2015 in Coffey County, Kansas.
Phillip was born June 26, 1955 in Emporia, Kansas, the son of Joseph Daniel (J.D.) and Mary Ellen (Waugh) Orear. He married Kathleen Trear on December 11, 1976 in Olpe, Kansas. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include: his mother, Mary Finlay of Emporia; sons, Todd P. Orear of Olpe, and Nicholas Orear of Emporia; daughter, Amber Peak of Emporia; brother, David Orear of Allen, Kansas; sister, Cynthia Fowler of Emporia; and five grandchildren, Payton Peters, Josie Orear, Rowdy Orear, Hadley Peak, and Porter Peak.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He was a lineman for Westar Energy and raised Welsh ponies. Phillip supported St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olpe, Kansas, was a member of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of America, International Brotherhood of Electric Workers local #304; and was president of the Oklahoma-Kansas Welsh Pony Society (OKWPS).
Phillip was an amazing man who loved his family, friends and living a big life. He never met a stranger and remembered everyone. If he met you in his day’s travels, he always stopped to talk, and of course this is why he always arrived later than expected. He loved his wife Kathy, his kids and grandchildren. He would proudly show anyone pictures of his grandkids—as long as you could help him work his phone. He once asked Kathy, “Why didn’t we start with grandkids?” Even though he may have grumbled a little, he never refused to do anything that his family asked of him, whether it was helping with moving or dressing up in goofy costumes at the horse show.
Many nieces, nephews and his children’s friends thought of him as a second dad because he always treated them as his own, teaching, reprimanding and encouraging them as he saw fit. He wanted to share his love of horses with everyone and would offer them a pony whether they wanted one or not. Phillip loved his horses. Roping, riding, driving—he loved it all. (Just don’t make him show a pony in a halter class, and he was happy!)
We love you Dad, and as you ride away, we will pray that God gives our cowboy the best horse in heaven.
