Phyllis Mowry, 75, Emporia, KS, formerly of San Diego, CA, and Lindsborg, KS, died at Newman Regional Health, Emporia on Tuesday, August 23, 2016
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church, Emporia. The services will be conducted by The Rev. Dinah Dutta, Ph.D. of the church. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery, Burlington, KS.
The family will receive friends at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, on Sunday, June 28, 2016 from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M.
Phyllis was born in San Diego, California, the daughter of Charles Russell and Nettie Mildred (Marsh) Mowry. She married Ronald D. Brown August 3, 1960, they later divorced. She later married James Reasman in Paradise, CA in 1975, and they also divorced.
Surviving family members include her daughter, Theresa (Brown) Seaton, and her husband, Raymond, Burlington, KS; and son, Ronald L. Brown, and his wife, Karla, Jacobs Creek, KS. She accepted Jim’s children, Michelle (who died earlier), Mike, Diane, and Sally Reasman as her own, as well as Teri and Ronald’s brother and sister, Nicole Dreier and Scott Brown. Also surviving are brothers, Larry Mowry, and wife Karen, Dawsonville, GA, Richard Mowry, and wife Linda, Imperial Beach, CA; sisters, Bev Stango, Sterling, VA, and Janet Loftis, and husband, Dale, Mesa, AZ; grandchildren, Amy (Seaton) Paris and Charlie West Monroe, LA, Nick Seaton and Emily (Lange), Lenexa, KS, Dylan Pankaskie, Gridley, KS, Jacob Brown, Burlington, KS, Marc Brown and his fiancee, Kaitlin George, Burlington, KS, Alea Brown and fiancé, PFC Brandon Stubblefield, USMC, Bowling Green, KY, Aaron and Stephanie Smith, Wellsville, KS, Justin Smith, Jacobs Creek, KS, and Kristen (Berry) Berner and Sam, Lawrence, KS; great-grandchildren, Rylee and Lillian Paris, West Monroe, LA, Adalynn Seaton, Lenexa, KS, Gemma and Brogan Smith, Wellsville, KS, Jillian Berry, Amelia and Jackson Berner, Lawrence, KS, and Kendall Brown, Jacobs Creek, KS; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Phyllis began her career in Los Angeles, CA, moving to San Diego, as a bookkeeper for firms including Atlas Electric and Race Electric, turning that skill into owning a business, PAR Services, that recruited and trained bookkeepers for construction firms. She became an insurance agent, representing Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL), and moved to Lindsborg, KS where she later worked for Farm Bureau Insurance. She was manager of the Country Haven Inn, Burlington, and worked at J.C. Penney, Emporia before her retirement.
She was an active member of Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church, Emporia. She was also a member and volunteer at the Emporia Arts Council, as well as the Theater Guild of Lindsborg and Burlington. She was voted “Most Likely To Succeed” from among her graduating class of 1959 from Mar Vista High School, San Diego, and won the Miss Imperial Beach contest in 1959.
