Polly Witten, 83, took the next step in her life on May 19, 2017 at Brookdale in Topeka, Kansas.
Polly Ann Warren was born February 21, 1934 to William and Mary Warren and was raised in the hills of Missouri on a self-supporting farm. Her parents were both teachers in one-room country schools near Edinburg, Missouri.
Polly followed in her parents’ footsteps and was an elementary teacher in Emporia for over 20 years. She was delighted to brag about her students’ successes in life. Even after retirement, she continued to “teach” her children and grandchildren by telling them that “you can’t soar with the eagles if you hoot with the owls.”
Polly lived on the same block in Emporia, Kansas for 55 years. She was the last member of the “Mother Mafia” which was a group of moms who kept watch in the neighborhood. Any child who lived in that area had several mothers and had to be good because if you weren’t, your mother knew it before you did.
Polly’s love of life was shown in her dedication to her family, which currently consists of two sisters: Jo (Ben) Bunnell and Fran (Norris) Waller; three sons: Mark (Chris) Witten, Karl (Linda) Witten, and Joe (Dana) Witten; six grandchildren: Brandon Witten, Stacy (Brian) Tate, Josh Witten, Kelley Witten, Josie (Zach) Kindhart, and Blaze Witten; and five great-grandchildren.
Polly loved spoiling her grandchildren. When they went out with grandma, dessert was first, and the meal was second if there was room.
She also loved flowers so much that there was no grass in her yard. Instead, the space was reserved for a multitude of flowers and a collection of large rocks “rustled” from around the United States.
Memorials in Polly’s honor may be made to the Emporia Animal Shelter and sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett. Per her wishes, there will be no formal service as she didn’t want her grandkids crying at her funeral. Instead, remember Polly and make lasting memories by planting a flower with a child or having dessert first at the next meal. Isn’t that what life is all about?
Mom, grandma, great-grandma – you are a peach!
