R. Lyle Brown

R. Lyle Brown, 72, of Emporia, Kansas, died on April 6, 2013 at his home in Emporia.

Lyle was born on August 10, 1940 in Smith Center, Kansas, the son of Frazier and Eva Olson Brown. He married Sue Warner on August 26, 1961 in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. She died on April 5, 2004 in Emporia. He later married Katharine Gunter on July 1, 2006 at his home in Emporia. She died on June 14, 2012 in Emporia.

He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Ash of Emporia, Pamela Marah and husband Donnie of Overland Park, Kansas, and Kristi Lauridsen of Olathe, Kansas; four stepchildren, D.J. Buhrle of Phoenix, Arizona, Berkley Buhrle of Salina, Kansas, Natasha Dietz of Oswego, Illinois, and Matthew Buhrle of Olathe; three grandchildren, Jessica Reed of Moberly, Missouri, and Kayti and Kristoffer Lauridsen of Olathe; six step-grandchildren; one great-grandson Jaxson Wooten of Moberly; and two step-great-grandchildren.

His is preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; a brother, Ronald; and a great-grandson.

Lyle attended Smith Center schools and Kansas State University, where he pledged Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity before transferring to Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, where he graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech and Mathematics. Lyle started his 23-year career with Bluestem Broadcasting (KVOE radio) while still attending college. He started as an evening disc jockey and advanced to Operations Manager for both AM and FM stations. He broadcasted many sporting events for Emporia State University, Emporia High School, and Roosevelt High. Lyle started the Emporium, and was one of the first hundred in the county to become a Certified Radio Marketing Consultant. His voice was heard internationally on sales presentations for local companies. He voiced over a hundred audio/visual presentations for various state wide groups, agencies, universities, etc. Most notable, the slide show at the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, Kansas.

For a short time in the mid 80's, he and his wife Sue owned and operated a furniture business in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Lyle was a computer specialist for Management Advisory Computer Systems for twenty plus years; he was a self-taught computer programmer.

Lyle was a member of First United Methodist Church, past president of the 56 followers Sunday school class, past president of the Emporia Jaycee’s, and was awarded a life-membership. He served on the Jaycee’s committee that developed Eastgate Plaza, and was an avid golfer and bridge player. He served as vice-president and board member of Emporia Golf Association.

Lyle enjoyed genealogy research since he was 15 years old, and designed a website that includes over 60,000 family names, and was the past president of the Flint Hills Genealogical Society, and served as charter vice-president. He was a past member of the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, serving several years on the Annual Meeting Committee. He is the author of the book FLOWN, and served as precinct committeeman for three different precincts in Emporia, and he also umpired college and semi-pro baseball for several years.

Cremation has taken place with a memorial service to be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, April 12, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Emporia.
