R. Eugene ‘Gene’ Hunter passed away peacefully at home on January 1, 2014 at the age of 84. He was born September 20, 1929 to Clarence E. and Frances K. Hunter in Independence, Missouri.

A graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, Gene began his advertising career with Capper Publications in Topeka, Kansas, where he met and married Barbara Miller on December 6, 1953. In 1958, Gene joined Hopkins Manufacturing of Emporia and spent the rest of his career as a businessman, founding Hunter Advertising and The Shopper.

As a young man, Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf, which became a passion that carried him past retirement until he could no longer play. He and Barbara also enjoyed dancing and playing golf at the Emporia Country Club. Gene and Barbara recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Gene is survived by Barbara Hunter, who was determined that he would live out his life in the home they made together. He is also survived by son, Todd Hunter and wife Ann of North Carolina; and daughter, Becky Clontz and husband Randy of Texas. Also surviving are grandchildren, Christopher Clontz, Kevin and Megan Clontz; Kate, Jake, and Matt Hunter; and Andrew and Christine (Hunter) Lucas.

The family would like to thank Teresa Trester, Loretta Grizzle and Dan Markowitz for their steadfast care and friendship to both Gene and Barbara these past years.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Roberts Blue Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. A visitation will take place during the hour before the service, also at the funeral home. Our family will miss his smile, his laugh and the wisdom he shared with us always.

In Lieu of Flowers, the family has established a memorial to the Emporia Public Library. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
