R. Marion Plummer, Emporia, Kansas, died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Magnolia Square Care Center, Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 88.
  
  
  
  Robert Marion Plummer was born in Emporia on April 18, 1926, the son of Robert and Roberta (Hamlin) Plummer. He and Paula Lowe were married in Emporia, on January 21, 1950. She died December 21, 1990.
  
  
  
  Surviving family members include his daughter, Jennifer Shields, Springfield, Missouri; grandchildren, Michael Johnson and Shauna Wilson, both of Springfield; and great-grandson, Cody Gaurotte, also of Springfield.
  
  
  
  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and son, Paul, who passed away on October 6, 2012.
  
  
  
  Marion received his Bachelor and Master Degrees from Emporia State University, then known as Kansas State Teachers College. He taught high school band at Garnett and Burlington, Kansas, then was a member of the army band at Camp Gordon, Georgia. After service he taught music at the College of Emporia, and later taught band at Olpe (Kansas) High School.
  
  
  
  He was a professional musician, often playing in small bands for musicians such as Mancini, Ray McKinley, and Bob Crosby, and as part of the local band, The Counts. Marion was also a composer and arranger, with several pieces performed by the C of E and E-State Stage bands, and also several high school bands.
  
  
  
  He was a longtime member of the Emporia Municipal Band, first mentioned in the trombone section in 1941, and playing off and on over several years. He took over as the conductor of the band in 1974, continuing through 1983.
  
  
  
  Funeral services will held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, July 11, 2014 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, conducted by Pastor Jeannie Jensen, First United Methodist Church, Emporia. Burial will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.
