Raye Lucille Bates, 99, Emporia, Kansas, died at Emporia Presbyterian Manor Friday morning, October 28, 2011.
Raye Lucille Gilbert was born in Grandview Township, Morris County, Kansas, on April 15, 1912, the daughter of Cecil and Gladys Eubank Gilbert. She married Alfred L. Bates at Council Grove, Kansas on June 7, 1930. He died December 4, 1978.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and daughter, Kay Lorraine Bowers, who died June 6, 2011.
Surviving family members include a grandson, Kenton Thomas, and his wife, Carol, of Emporia; and two great-grandsons, Aaron Thomas, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Evan Thomas, Topeka, Kansas.
She managed the Hays House in Council Grove for a time in the 30’s, moving to Emporia with her husband later. During World War II she worked for the Office of Price Administration in Emporia. Following the close of that office, she went to work for the Sears Roebuck & Company Catalogue Store, eventually becoming store manager. She worked there until the early 70’s when she retired.
Following her retirement she enjoyed time with her husband at their cabin at Lake Kahola until his death, and later helping to raise her great-grandsons.
She was a member of Miriam Chapter #14, Order of the Eastern Star, and the auxiliary to Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.
Funeral services will be held at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Tuesday Morning, November 1, 2011, at 10:30 A.M. The service will be conducted by Pastor Lee Hoskins. Interment will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Friends and family may gather at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service.
