Raymond "Bud" M. Brown

Raymond M. “Bud” Brown, Emporia, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Sterling House of Emporia at the age of 98.


Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, on Monday, June 24, 2013 at 11:00 A.M., with Father Rich Warsnak, Celebrant. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military graveside honors by the United States Army, Fort Riley, Kansas.


The Rosary will be recited at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Sunday evening at 7:30, led by Deacon Mark Ostrowski.


Raymond was born at Olpe, Kansas on April 23, 1915, the son of Mathew and Emma (Trear) Brown. He married Janet Rossillon on May 1, 1944 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Olpe. She died May 15, 2002.


Surviving family members include three daughters: Sarah Wyrick, and husband, Herb, Emporia; Julia McKanna Meyer, and husband, Dennis, Olathe; Marie Reece, and husband, Bob, Council Grove; sister, Clara Cooper, Topeka; seven granddaughters; and twelve great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, three brothers, and four sisters.


Bud graduated from Olpe High School, was catcher for the Olpe Town Team, farmed with his brother southwest of Emporia and was a car man on the Santa Fe Railway before being drafted.


He served in World War II with the 95th Infantry Division under Patton’s Third Army, which landed in Normandy in August of 1944. They liberated the fortress city of Metz, then fought into Germany. He was awarded a battlefield commission as a Second Lieutenant, and later promoted to First Lieutenant. He received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star with Cluster, and other citations.


He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a car man for 34 years. Bud was an avid gardener and golfer. He coached Little League for the Emporia Recreation Commission for many years. He loved all sports and saw their rules as metaphors for the rules of life.


The family requests no flowers.
