Richard Gerald “Bud” Stapp. 70, Emporia, passed away at his home on Sunday, October 1, 2017.
Bud was born in DeKalb, Missouri on December 5, 1946, the son on Richard G (Sr.) and Iona Lucy (Arnold) Stapp. Bud and Mary Beth Meers were married in Junction City, Kansas on August 21, 1970. She survives of the home.
He is also survived by his Daughter; Tammie (Robert) Kirk, Starkville, MS, Son: Matthew (Christina) Stapp, Winchester, KS, Brothers; James Stapp (Cindy Waltman) of New Hampshire, John Stapp, Emporia, KS, Bill (Mavice) Stapp, Omaha, NE, and Harold (Becky) Stapp, Emporia, KS, Sister; Diana (Allan) Hundley, Atchison, KS, and Grandchildren: Matthew, Jr. and Elizabeth Stapp, Winchester, KS, and Gates and Stapp Kirk, Starkville, MS.
Bud was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country during the Viet Nam Conflict. He moved to Emporia in 1966 to attend Kansas State Teachers College (later Emporia State University). He was a member of Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion. He was a long time teacher and administrator in the Emporia School District. Bud was also a member of the Sertoma Club of Emporia, and the Americus Officials Assn. He was Co-founder of the Emporia Energy Girls Softball Program, and one of the organizers of the Northern Expo trips to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. For many years Bud was a football and basketball official.
He loved playing with his grandchildren, working on his old trucks, officiating football, and being outside.
Cremation is planned. Memorial Services will be held at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. The service will be conducted by Pastor Hal Selby, Starkville, MS. Burial will follow at the Americus Cemetery, Americus, KS with military honors presented by an honors detail from Fort Riley, KS and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion and Lowry Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM
Memorials have been designated to the Sertoma Miniature Train at Soden’s Grove or the Honor Flights of South Lyon County USD 252.
