Richard Eugene Fowler, 78, of Emporia, Kansas died Monday, September 22, 2014 at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.
Richard Eugene “Gene” was born January 7, 1936 in Emporia, the son of Jesse Wilbur and Delorise (Troyer) Fowler. Gene married Rosalie Chapman in Emporia on October 21, 1956. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include: son, Doug Fowler and wife Michelle of Emporia; daughter, Janice Fowler of Lenexa, Kansas; sister, Linda Nixon of Neosho Rapids, Kansas; grandchildren, Jessica Puff, Misty Fowler-Fleming, Jennifer Henning, Brandon Fowler, Kyle Culbertson, Kayla Walker and Nicole Culbertson; step-grandson, Jason Culbertson; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim Fowler.
Gene’s first job was a delivery driver for Coca-Cola in Emporia. He then went to work for Southwestern Bell as a service representative. At the same time, he was a Reserve Police Officer in Shawnee, Kansas. Gene served in the National Guard. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Emporia and served as an usher. Gene was very active with Emporia Senior Center and served on the board of directors for many years. He was a member of the Lyon County Senior Patrol, Shawnee Mission Jaycees, and was active with Junior Achievement at Shawnee Mission North High School.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 26, 2014 at Grace United Methodist Church in Emporia. Interment will follow in Fowler Cemetery, Emporia. Pastor Susan Daniel-Brey of Grace United Methodist Church will be officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia.
