Richard Schlup, Jr.

December 8, 1942 — July 23, 2025

Retired Emporia firefighter and Navy Veteran, Richard M. Schlup, Jr, passed away in his home on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

Rick's memorial will be held this Saturday, August 2nd, at 11:00 AM at 2433 W. View Dr, Emporia, KS 66801.

Rick was born on December 8, 1942, to Richard and Doris Schlup in Salina, Kansas.

Rick's passions included music -- a talent he shared generously -- fishing, drawing, street rods and riding motorcycles. He was a truly gifted singer, blessed with a beautiful, unique voice that could stir the soul, and the remarkable ability to weave magic on both guitar and keyboard, among other instruments. His performances graced countless events as both a second job and for family and friends, often with his beloved wife, Linda, by his side adding beautiful harmony or leading a song.  Rick also found joy in attending car shows, where he proudly displayed several of his own cars over the years.

But, Rick's greatest joy was his family. He married Linda Buffington on December 4, 1965. Their love story spanned six decades, a testament to their unwavering commitment and deep affection.  Together, they built a beautiful family that prioritized spending time together and strong traditions.  Those traditions still carry on today.

Rick leaves behind his wife, Linda Schlup; his children, Eric Schlup and his wife, Michele, and Kimberly Mattox and her husband, Randy. Grandchildren include Kara Castigliano, Erika Schlup Maley and her husband, Jacob, and Ryan Schlup. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Mason, Cooper and Khloe Maley. Additionally, he is survived by his sisters, Sharon Lambert and her husband, Rodney, and Jane Peabody and her husband, David, along with many other cherished family members and friends.

The informal celebration of Rick's life will focus on sharing cherished memories. Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and are invited to roast hotdogs and share their personal stories about Rick. Family encourages those who have them to drive their street rods to the lunch gathering. Following the memorial lunch, those who wish to participate are welcome to join a cruise to Braum's on 6th Avenue in Emporia.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Emporia Fire Department Honor Guard.
