Richard "Doc" Keeling

Richard P. “Doc” Keeling, 79, Emporia, Kansas, died at his home Wednesday, September 22, 2010.

Richard P. Keeling was born at Crawfordsville, Indiana on September 17, 1931, the son of Clifford and Bessie (Paire) Keeling. He married Judith Faulkner March 22, 1952, at Long Beach, California. She survives.

Daughter: Joanne Denise “Jody” Gross and husband Tim of Piedmont, Oklahoma
Son: Karl Andrew Keeling, Emporia, Kansas
Grandchildren: Harlan Matthew Gross and Kelly Ruth Gross.

Dr. Keeling was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Caroline Drouin; and brother, Robert.

Dr. Keeling was retired and had served as a biology professor at Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas, for a number of years. He taught Microbiology and Mycology. He received his Bachelors Degree from Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana, and his Master Degree and PhD from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. He was a member & Past President of Emporia Area Retired School Personnel.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U. S. Marine Corps in counter mortar radar. He was a member and Past Commander of Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, where he had also served in the color guard, and he was a member of Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had been a bingo caller for both organizations.

Graveside services will be at the Evergreen Cemetery, south of Emporia, Kansas on Monday, September 27, 2010, at 11:00 A.M. conducted by Rev. Jim Akers. Military services by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion and Lowry-Funston post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 7:00 PM until 8:00 P.M.

Memorials have been established to Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, or Scholarships at Newman Division of Nursing, Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas.
