Richard Solis of Emporia, Kansas, died peacefully in his sleep Friday morning, September 9, 2011. He was 77.
Richard was born on May 11, 1934, to Aurelio and Rosa (Quintana) Solis in Emporia. On August 30, 1958, he married Delores Rangel.
After high school, Richard entered the U.S. Air Force where he received training as a jet fighter mechanic. While in the service, he also played semi-professional football for the Amarillo Yellow Jackets. Following his discharge from the USAF, Richard then attended Emporia State University where he lettered in football as a freshman. Throughout his adult life, Richard worked at a variety of jobs in the Emporia area including Iowa Beef Processors, Kansas Power & Light, and Bluestem Farm & Ranch.
Richard enjoyed many hobbies including golf, billiards, traveling, and collecting cameras.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 53 years, Delores Solis; one son, Gilbert (Lynne) Solis of Bastrop, Texas; one daughter, Penny (Steve) Volmer of Shawnee, Kansas; six grandchildren, Nicole Volmer of Shawnee; Stephanie (Mike) Risk of Fairfax, Virginia; Leslie (Brandon) Ludwig of Denver, Colorado; Jennifer Volmer of Shawnee; Robert Solis of Bastrop; and Raymond Solis of Bastrop.
On August 31, 2011, Richard celebrated greatly the birth of a great-grandson, Michael Stephen Risk of Fairfax, Virginia.
Richard is also survived by two brothers, Phillip Solis and Jesse (Diana) Solis, both of Emporia. He was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest brother, Max Solis.
Richard will be remembered as a caring, loving, and generous husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a friend to all.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, September 12, 2011, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, 205 S. Lawrence, Emporia, with Father Ray May conducting the service. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 12, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. until the Rosary at 7:00 P.M., also at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. Burial with military honors by Ball-McColm Post #5 American Legion, and Lowry-Funston Post #1980 Veterans of Foreign Wars will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery following the mass.
