Rob Roy Macgregor

Rob Roy MacGregor, Jr. age 91, of Emporia, Kansas, died at his home on Wednesday, June 29, 2016.

Mr. MacGregor was born May 19, 1925 in Steubenville, Ohio, the son of Rob Roy MacGregor and Beatrice Mae (Griffiths) MacGregor. He served in the U.S. Army from July, 1943 to March 1946 in a Combat Engr. Battalion. He served in Europe from 1944 to 1946 in the 3rd Army of Gen. Patton. He was married in Sunbury, PA on June 10, 1950 to Althea Suzanne Hitchcock, daughter of James W. Hitchcock, of Scotland, and Althea (Davitt) Hitchcock.

He graduated from Ohio State University in 1951 with a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering and a Master of Science. He worked in Oklahoma for Phillips Petroleum Company and for 26 years for Allied Chemical in Hopewell, VA. He was sole or co-inventor on 16 US patents related to chemical research. Besides enjoying fishing, he was very interested in music. He played the Highland bagpipe for 12 years with a pipe band located in Williamsburg, VA. He sang tenor in church choirs for over 65 years and was active in several barbershop choruses over the years.

He and Suzanne had six children, one of whom, Rob Roy III, predeceased him in 1957. He had 3 daughters, Mari-Anne MacGregor of Portland, OR; LCDR Robyn K. MacGregor (U.S.C.G., retd.) of Emporia, KS; and Gylla A. MacGregor (Pete), of Bloomsbury, NJ. He leaves two sons, The Reverend Canon Ian H. MacGregor (Cam), of Raleigh, NC; and Col. James W. MacGregor (Debbie), Pembroke Pines, FL. He has 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, July 8, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at the First Christian Church, Emporia, Kansas. The service will be conducted by his son, The Reverend Canon Ian MacGregor, and Dr. David Webb, of the church.

Cremation has occurred. His ashes will be scattered at Cremora Lake Overlook along the Shenandoah Drive in the Shenandoah Valley.
