Robert Clinton Whitaker

April 5, 1914 — March 4, 2013

Robert Clinton Whitaker passed from this life on Monday, March 4, 2013. He was born on April 5, 1914 to Andy and Edna Nichols Whitaker of rural Dunlap, Kansas. He was one month short of his 99th birthday.

Robert married his surviving wife, Velma Leeds, on March 3, 1946 at the Bushong United Methodist Church, Bushong, Kansas. Although quite ill over the past month, with God's blessing, Robert bestowed one last gift to the love of his life. He survived just long enough to celebrate their 67th wedding anniversary.

Robert lived all but seven years of his life on the family farm in rural Dunlap. It is where he and his wife raised their three surviving children: son, Rodney Whitaker (Patty), of Council Grove, Kansas; and daughters, Lucricia Banks of Emporia, Kansas, and Katrina Morgan (Sid), of Americus, Kansas. He considered himself fortunate to do what he loved, which was farming, and keeping some horses and cattle. Even during the worst times of his illness, Robert was able to make his family laugh with his quick wit and reminiscences of life on the farm.

Robert is also survived by his loving grandchildren: Jeffrey and Dalton Whitaker, Staci Almager, Paula VanTyle, Brian and Mark Morgan, and Melanie Privat as well as 16 great-grandchildren. He never took any of these treasures for granted and up to his last day, would smile and say how fortunate he has been to have lived the life he had.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Andrew Whitaker; sister-in-law, Helen Whitaker; and son-in-law, Bruce Banks.

Friends may call at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, 605 State St., Emporia, on Thursday, March 7, 2013 from 6:00-7:00 PM.
