Roy M. Schaefer

Roy M. Schaefer, 88, of Emporia, Kansas, died Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Holiday Resort Care Center, Emporia.

Roy Mount Schaefer, the son of George and Martha Mount Schaefer, was born June 2, 1925 in Emporia. He married Emma Jane Baker on August 21, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri. She preceded him in death on September 30, 2006.

Roy was a Santa Fe engineer for 35 years, retiring in 1987, and was a Navy veteran of WW II. He was also a member of West Side Baptist Church, Ball-McColm Post #5 of the American Legion, Lowry-Funston Post #1980 of the V.F.W. and Emporia Masonic Lodge #12, A.F. & A.M.

He is survived by four sons, Glen Schaefer of Carlsbad, California, Lloyd and Karen Schaefer of Overland Park, Kansas, Mark Schaefer of Emporia, Darrell and Shari Schaefer of Frisco, Texas; ten grandchildren, Thad Schaefer, Dawn Steiner, Tyler Schaefer, Brett Schaefer, Cody Schaefer, Rebecca Johnson, Eric Schaefer, Susan Schaefer, Sara Schaefer, Jennifer Schaefer; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Henry Schaefer and Marion Schaefer; and two sisters, Fern Stockton and Ione Wilson.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 16, 2014 at West Side Baptist Church, Emporia.  Burial will follow at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, May 16, 2014 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. Rev. Kenneth Armstrong of West Side Baptist Church will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion and Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Emporia Masonic Lodge #12 A.F. & A.M. will conduct the Masonic service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has designated two memorial funds, either to the Sertoma Miniature Train or Emporia Friends of the Zoo. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
