Ruth Helmke of Emporia, Kansas, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 in the emergency room at Newman Regional Health, Emporia; she was 83.
Ruth Wombolt, the daughter of George and Eva Lackman Wombolt, was born in Laurel, Montana on December 2, 1927. She married Gene Helmke in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He died earlier.
Surviving members of the family include: a brother, Frank Wombolt of Laurel, Montana; a sister, Martha Bleake of Reno, Nevada; and several nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Esther Heins and Amelia Adams.
She had been the dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota. After retiring from the university, she and her husband, Gene, owned and operated a campground in Cokato, Minnesota until his death. Following Gene’s death, she moved to Emporia, Kansas, to be near her nieces.
She was a member of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women’s group of the church.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with Pastor John Davis officiating.
