Ruth E. Hughes, 97, longtime resident of Emporia, Kansas, went home to her Heavenly Father on September 19, 2013, in San Antonio, Texas, with son, John and daughter, Janet at her side.
  
  
  Ruth was born in Beloit, Kansas, on February 9, 1916, to John and Margaret McCall. After graduating from Beloit High School, Ruth moved to Emporia to attend the Emporia Teachers College, where she received a degree in music and education. She taught music and elementary education in the Emporia Public Schools. She later made a career change to become a medical office receptionist for Dr. Charles Underwood.
  
  
  Ruth Hughes was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church; Miriam Chapter #14 Order of the Eastern Star; Chapter DI P.E.O. Sisterhood; Newman Memorial Hospital Auxiliary “Pink Ladies”; and Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity, Emporia State Alumni Chapter.
  
  
  Ruth enjoyed traveling the world with her late husband, Manuel Hughes. They also enjoyed many fishing trips together in North and South Dakota, Colorado, and nearby in the Flint Hills of Kansas. She loved to cook and bake, and enjoyed gardening and bird watching.
  
  
  She shared her musical talents in voice, viola, and piano throughout her lifetime. During her younger years in Beloit, Ruth and two other friends also named Ruth formed a string and vocal trio appropriately named “The Three Ruths.” They entertained many at various functions in Beloit, with Ruth playing the viola and singing alto.
  
  
  Ruth married Thomas Evans on November 16, 1939. He passed away in June 1960. She married J. Manual Hughes on May 3, 1964. He passed away in August 1996. She was also preceded in death by parents, John and Margaret McCall, and daughter, Barbara Ann Evans.
  
  
  Survivors include: sister, Dorothy McFadden of Tulsa, Oklahoma; sister, Margaret Wathne and spouse Clifford of Wichita, Kansas; daughter, Janet Delaney and spouse Peyton of San Antonio, Texas; son, John Evans of Modesto California; stepdaughter, Kathryn Woodbury and spouse Fred of Quenemo, Kansas; stepdaughter, Elizabeth Casas and spouse Norman of Washington, Maine; stepson, Robert Hughes and spouse Sharon of Buena Vista, Colorado; three grandsons; three great-grandsons; fifteen step-grandchildren; and numerous step-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
  
  
  Ruth will be dearly missed by many, but always lovingly remembered for her generous heart and quiet kindness.
  
  
  Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Emporia, on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. Memorial contributions may be made to Emporia Presbyterian Church, and sent in care of the funeral home.
