Ruth Jacob, 95, formerly of Americus, passed away at Holiday Resort, Emporia, on Tuesday, August 18, 2015.
Ruth Irene Long was born on the family farm near Gibbon, Oklahoma on July 10, 1920, the daughter of John C. and Winnie (French) Long. She Married Cleo C. Jacob in her parent’s living room in Freeport, Kansas on June 20, 1943. He died June 5, 2012.
Surviving family members include her daughter, Cynthia Maxwell, Emporia; brothers, Dean Long, Mercedes, Texas and Wayne Long, Grapeland, Texas; sister, Janice Duever, Spring Valley, California; and two grandchildren, Ryan Maxwell, Haysville, Kansas and Sherri Maxwell, of Denver, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Dwight and Loren Long; and sisters, Maxine Cooper and Lucille Mingle.
When Ruth was seven, the family moved to a farm in Harper County, near Freeport, Kansas, where she attended a country school through the eighth grade. She attended and graduated from Anthony (Kansas) High School.
Following graduation, she entered Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, receiving her life certificate to teach grades one through eight. It was at KSTC that she met her future husband, Cleo. Ruth taught at Dow Valley School north of Emporia for three years. She then spent many years at home caring for her family. In later years Ruth worked as a clerk at K-Mart, and for 13 years at the Sunflower Nook. She was a member of the Good Times Club in the Americus Community, and had attended First Christian Church, Emporia.
Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, August 21, 2015 at the Patio Garden, Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia, conducted by Pastor Rob Clausen, First Baptist Church. The Family will receive friends at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:00.
