Ruth M. Lewis, 90, of rural Emporia, Kansas, departed this life on January 3, 2013 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
Ruth was born on February 7, 1922 at Youngstown in Marion County, Kansas, the daughter of Walter C. and Gladys M. Higgins Kaniper. She married Vernon M. Lewis on February 10, 1941 in Miller, Kansas. He died on November 25, 1995 in Emporia.
Surviving family members include: son, Briant V. Lewis of Augusta, Kansas; daughters, Beverly Curry and Charlene McIlvain, both of Emporia; sister, Lenora Thompson of Osage City, Kansas; grandchildren, Brad Hayes, Jerry Hayes, Tricia Hayes, Tammy Williams, Cris Waggoner, Terry McIlvain, Ellen Young, Susan Lewis, and Gavin Lewis; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Maurice, Harold, and Charles Kaniper; sister, Helen Sparks; and a son-in-law, Dale McIlvain.
Ruth worked for Walmart for many years before retiring 12 years ago. She was a member of First Congregational Church, Coal Creek Extension Unit, Chamness 4-H Club, and the Eagle Creek Saddle Club.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. Burial will take place following the service at Evergreen Cemetery south of Emporia. Visitation will be Monday evening, January 7, 2013 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
