Ruth Alice Smith, 75, of Emporia, Kansas, died on May 12, 2011 at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.

Ruth was born on July 10, 1935 in Emporia, Kansas, the daughter of A.G. and Willa (Bell) Pickett. She married Robert W. Smith on June 9, 1956 in Topeka, Kansas. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include: sons, Steve Smith and wife Mary Beth of Overland Park, Kansas, Mike Smith and wife Shelly of Manhattan, Kansas, Brent Smith and wife Cherryl of Tonganoxie, Kansas, and Jay Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren, Ryan, Ralley, Bryan, Scott, Bethany, Haley, Carley, Julianne, Hannah, Mariah, Quillyn, Michael, Mason, and Gabriela; and great-grandchildren, Brynley, and Cooper.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Richard Pickett.

Ruth attended Elementary and Junior High School in Manhattan, Kansas. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1953. In 1956, Ruth received her Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics Education from Kansas State University. She received her Master’s Degree in Counselor Education from Emporia State University in 1973. Ruth worked 22 years at Flint Hills Technical College as an instructor, counselor, and Financial Aid Officer until she retired in 1997.

Ruth was a member of First United Methodist Church in Emporia, Newman Hospital Auxiliary, Kansas State Alumni Association, Kansas Vocational Counselor Association, Kansas Association College Registrars, Kansas Association Student Financial Aid Administrators, and Delta Delta Delta sorority. Ruth volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Newman Hospital, Bloodmobile, and many local sporting events.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, Emporia. The service will be conducted by Pastor Nancy Gammill of the church. There will be a reception following the service. A private family graveside service will take place prior to the service.
