Sammy Jay King, 66, of Admire, Kansas, died on September 24, 2012 at Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka, Kansas.


Sam was born on August 8, 1946 in Emporia, Kansas, the son of Leonard and Betty Palmer King. He married Lois Finley on February 2, 1974 in Edna, Kansas. She survives at the home.

Other survivors include: son, Sammy King, Jr. of Topeka; daughter, Kimberly K. King of Emporia; grandson, Gabriel M. King of Emporia; brothers, Robert King of Wichita, Kansas, Leonard King of Fresno, California, and Jack King; sisters, Sarah Armour of Olpe, Kansas, and Betty Geiger of Emporia.


He is preceded in death by his son Kristopher Neal King, and his parents.


Sam served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded a Purple Heart and the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars. From the injuries received in combat, he was retired from the Army. For many years, he was a feed truck driver for the Ford County Feedyard in Ford, Kansas, until moving to the Admire area.


Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, October 1, 2012 at the Admire United Methodist Church in Admire. Mr. Mark Stukey will conduct the service. Burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Toledo, Kansas with military honors by the Ft. Riley Casualty Unit.

A visitation will be held on Sunday evening, September 30, 2012 from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. A memorial has been established for Gabriel M.
