Sandra Jean Rathke Graham, known lovingly as Sandy, passed away on April 23, 2026, at Chase County Care and Rehabilitation Center in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. She was 85 years old. Born on December 1, 1940, in Emporia, Kansas, to Ernest Rathke and Hattie Vahsholtz Rathke, Sandra grew up with a generous spirit and a warmth that would define her entire life.

On October 19, 1963, Sandra married Gale Graham at Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia and remained a faithful Lutheran throughout her life. Together they built a home filled with family that became the center of Sandra's world. She often told those closest to her that her greatest achievement and deepest love in life were each and every one of her children. Her face would always light up whenever any of them walked through the door, no matter what she was doing.

Sandra enjoyed family gatherings. Easter, Christmas, Mother's Day, Labor Day, and every occasion in between was reason enough to gather together, from the oldest generation to the youngest great-grandbabies. A drive through her beloved Flint Hills, enjoying a cookout at the lake while the kids swam, or visiting with her sister, Joyce, while all the cousins scattered about laughing and playing was her idea of paradise. She adored country and western culture, family trips with her brother, Larry, and her parents to the mountains of Colorado, and all things turquoise. She loved babies, long conversations, and plenty of girl time. Sandra also had a boundless love for her pets. She was never just a cat person or a dog person; her heart was big enough for both, and there was always room for one more.

Those who knew Sandra invariably described her as "just the sweetest" and said she "always gives the best hugs." Her love was steadfast and true, always offered freely to anyone who sat down for a visit.

Sandra was preceded in death by her father, Ernest, her mother, Hattie, and her beloved son, Dustin Graham. She is survived by her husband, Gale Graham of Strong City; along with her sons, Richard Graham (Kathy) of Council Grove, Leonhard Graham, and Greggory Graham of Strong City; her daughters, Theresa Whitaker of Emporia and Laurele Graham of Cottonwood Falls; her brother, Larry Rathke of Americus; her sister, Joyce Swift (Melvin) of Matfield Green; her niece, Holly Brittain (Dwight) of Strong City; and grandchildren, Levi Whitaker, Courtney Rickenbrode (Wade), Zachary Graham (Jocelyn), Luke Whitaker, Katelynn Graham; and 2 great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of family and friends who will miss her dearly.

May she rest in the everlasting peace and grace of our Lord.

Services will be held on Thursday, April 30 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia at 2:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Strong City Cemetery. A memorial has been established with the Emporia Friends of the Zoo with contributions sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, PO Box #175, Emporia, Kansas 66801, which is in charge of arrangements.
