Santos Quirarte, 92, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at his home in Emporia, Kansas. Santos was born in Caney, Kansas on July 12, 1921, the son of Dionicio and Hilaria Padilla-Quirarte.
  
  
  Santos attended school in Strong City, Kansas. He was drafted into the military and served on active duty from 1942 to 1945. He received four bronze stars during WWII. While on active duty, he became pen pals with an elementary school teacher from Mexico. Upon being discharged from the military, he traveled to Mexico to meet his long distance pen pal (Margaret) and asked her to marry him. They were married in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico on February 23, 1946. They lived most of their married life in Strong City, where Santos worked for the Santa Fe Railroad until his retirement on July 9, 1982. In 1984, Margaret and Santos moved to Emporia.
  
  
  Preceding him in death were his wife, Margaret, who died in 2012; his great-granddaughter, Lila Belle Deitrich, who died in 2013; his parents; his two sisters, Carmen and Julia; and his two brothers, Francisco and Daniel.
  
  
  He is survived by his five sons, John (Julie) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Leo of Broomfield, Colorado, Ed (Carol) of Wichita, Kansas, Cesar (Wanda) of Bartlett, Tennessee, and Gene (Deb) of Lawrence, Kansas; three daughters, Rose (Don) Good of Council Grove, Kansas, Evie (John) Deitrich of Holton, Kansas, and Gloria (Kenny) Davis of Independence, Kansas; 23 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
  
  
  Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia. The Mass will celebrated by Father Richard Warsnak. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Emporia, with military honors by Ball-McColm Post #5 American Legion and Lowry-Funston Post #1980 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Rosary will be recited Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia. The family will receive friends following the Rosary.
  
  
  In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Sacred Heart Altar Society, with contributions sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
