Sarah E. Brown (94) of rural Olpe, Kansas, passed away Monday, May 2, 2011 at Emporia Presbyterian Manor, Emporia, Kansas.

Sarah Ethel Hotzel, the daughter of Frederick and Julia Schaefer Hotzel, was born February 21, 1917 at the family home at 9 Mechanic in Emporia. She attended Sacred Heart Elementary School in Emporia and graduated from Emporia High School in 1935. Before her marriage, she was a clerk at Woolworths in Emporia specializing in millinery products. On a date arranged by her friends, Ann Trear and Tony Erpelding, she met Sylvester Lawrence Brown.

She and Sylvester L. “Boots” Brown were married June 10, 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia. After their marriage she helped her husband operate their farm north of Olpe. In 2004, they were awarded the Kansas Farm Bureau Century Farm Award from the Lyon County Farm Bureau for their fourth generation farm. Sylvester passed away on October 27, 2004.

Sarah loved gardening, baking, canning, needle point, and crocheting. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. Ann’s Altar Society. She also was a member of the Association of Hetlinger Developmental Services, Inc.

She is survived by: three sons, Donald Brown, Leo Brown, and Gary Brown, all of rural Olpe, Kansas; two daughters, Sister Joan Marie Brown OSF of Albuquerque New Mexico, and Carol Ann Brown of Emporia; one sister, Rosalie Edminston of Americus, Kansas; three grandchildren, Jessica Barney, Stacy Benton, and Tyler Brown; and three great-grandchildren, Dominic Benton, Devon Benton, and Kevin Brown.
Sarah was preceded in death by: her husband; eight brothers, Frederick, John, Albert, Elmer, Andrew, Paul, Carl, and James; three sisters, Inez Prchal, Dorothy Thomas and Mary Turner.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 A.M. Saturday, May 7, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olpe, Kansas, with Fr. Anthony Williams as the celebrant. The Rosary will be recited 7 P.M. Friday, May 6, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with a family visitation before and after the rosary. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Olpe.
